IFC – RECAN – Used Beverage Cans (UBC) Supply Network Development

International Finance Corporation (IFC) seeks to support economically sound and environmentally and socially responsible recycling businesses in Southeast Europe, e.g. Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, FYR Macedonia and Serbia by implementing an integrated program geared towards enhanced competitiveness of the industry players, upgraded environmental standards and improved social welfare of the individual scrap collectors.
The Client for which the project has been developed is privately owned company that buys and recycles aluminum used beverage cans in the region.
The company planned to improve its UBC supply chain in the region and increase its recycling activities by sustaining leadership position in recycling aluminum UBC in the region. Thus, to grow further the Client needed to secure its aluminum UBC supplies and increase the quantities of UBC collected in the region for which the support by a consulting company is needed.
The overall objective of the project was to support the Client in its efforts to improve the existing UBC supply chain in the region and increase its recycling activities by sustaining leadership position in recycling aluminum UBC in the region.
BLUESAVE with their expert team scanned the present situation of the collection system and after comparing the results of the analysis and the UBC market data provided recommendations on how to optimise the collection system in the future.
BLUESAVE elaborated an action plan in regards to the client’s UBC supply network development necessary to guide the company growth in the region (Albania, Macedonia, Bosnia and Serbia) for the next three years.
The given recommendations supported the Client to develop an action plan to guide the management in developing an effective UBC collection system in the region.
The project contributed significantly to the socio-economic situation of those population groups directly involved in the collection of the UBCs. Therefore BLUESAVE designed and implemented a tailor-made training program, providing both professional knowledge as well as social skills, for the project participants involved in the collection and recycling process.
“… The recycling industry has a strong growth potential, it has a strategic importance to the economy and posses a deep value chain with a large number of SMEs and individual scrap collectors in the SEEC …”
